No. 32, June 2017 Orient Bulletin: Academic Freedom under Threat History, Society and Culture in Asia, the Middle East and Africa
ZMO's new Orient Bulletin is now online. ZMO fellows Katrin Bromber, Katharina Lange and Heike Liebau formulate their thoughts on the current worldwide pressure against academic freedom in their opening article: »Staying silent is a luxury that we can no longer afford«. In the profile section Britta Frede and Rana von Mende present their research projects on Female Islamic Scholars in Mauretania and Gender Roles in the Late Ottoman Empire and the Early Turkish Republic. Furthermore the Bulletin gives an insight into ZMO's latest activites and events. Take a read!

11-13 April 2018, Berlin Call for Papers: Servants’ Pasts : 2nd International Conference Closing Date: 15 September 2017
The ERC funded project "Domestic Servants in Colonial South Asia" invites papers for its second international conference. The conference will explore the various regional histories of domestic work and service within South Asia, as reflected in different language-based sources. It will also explore comparative similarities and specificities in domestic work across diverse imperial, colonial and postcolonial settings. The temporal range will include the early modern and modern periods (sixteenth century to the contemporary). The organizers nevertheless remain interested in soliciting conceptual and thematic contributions extending further in time that would promise to explore the long history of domestic servitude in South Asia... Saturday, 9 September 2017, Mittelhof, Kirchweg 33, 14129 Berlin Open House Day - Tag der offenen Tür European Heritage Days
As last year ZMO organizes its open house day in cooperation with the Historische Kommission zu Berlin. Visitors get an insight into the research of the two institutions in different lectures under the title "City - Power - Splendor". Additionally the program offers a concert by the cross-repertoire band Mückenheimer from Potsdam, a children program, street food by REFUEAT, as also guided tours through ZMO's working place, the more than 100 years old Mittelhof, build by famous German architect Hermann Muthesius. The open house day takes place in coordination with the Berlin-wide Tag des offenen Denkmals in the framework of the European Heritage Days. A detailed program will soon be available... | |

The planetary ecological crisis of global warming cannot be addressed without understanding struggles for access to natural resources and environmental justice in the global South. Anthropo(S)cene: Film and Climate Justice in Asia and Africa is a programme of short and feature length films showcasing recent filmmaking from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Bringing together the work of artists, filmmakers, activists, journalists and academics whose films tackle climate change, it features a wide array of documentaries and art films from Nepal to Niger, Kuwait to South Africa.
The film festival is organized in cooperation with the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung and will take place at the Moviemento cinema in Berlin-Kreuzberg. A detailed program will soon be available... | |

ZMO associate Dr Hilal Alkan receives the Voltaire Prize
ZMO congratulates its associate researcher Dr Hilal Alkan on receiving the "Voltaire Prize for Tolerance, International Understanding and Respect for Differences". The prize amounts to € 5,000 and is financed by the Friede Springer Foundation. Each year, the University of Potsdam awards the prize to one young scholar who has made an important contribution to the social dialogue on peace, international understanding and tolerance, or who has campaigned for freedom in research and teaching, or the right of free expression. Alkan, who is the very first laureate, signed a petition against the war in the Kurdish territories and denounced the actions committed by security forces against civilians. She was subsequently fired from her post.
